We’ve seen the BMW M2 being tested against all sorts of cars recently but the truth of the matter is there’s only one car out there that can really be considered a rival for the Bavarian machine. That car is the current Audi TT RS Coupe, a rapid machine by all means, powered by what may very be the best five-cylinder turbocharged mill out there and, even though it has a smaller displacement than the M2, it comes with more power.
On paper the two are close but the Audi edges the BMW due to a couple of essential differences. First of all, the TT RS comes with all-wheel drive and that gives it an advantage in terms of traction off the line, translating into a better 0-62 mph sprint time. According to Audi, the RS will do it in 3.7 seconds which is considerably faster than the M2. The Bavarian machine, even in its fastest guise, the DCT-equipped model will do the same sprint in 4.3 seconds, if you get the launch right as the RWD setup of the car isn’t nearly as compliant as the quattro setup of the Audi.
Then there’s the power factor. The M2 uses an upgraded version of the N55 engine we’ve all grown to love over the years. It develops 370 HP and 465 Nm of torque whereas the 2.5-liter five-cylinder mill of the TT RS makes 400 HP and 480 Nm of torque. Therefore, the Audi has the edge in both grip and power but how exactly does that translate into the real world? Is the difference that big?
The video below will provide some indication as to how the two compare but you need to remember that the shots were taken on different days and in different conditions so the results should be taken with a grain of salt. Nevertheless, it’s quite obvious that the TT RS is the faster machine. Now we’ll all have to wait and see how the BMW M2 Competition will fare against it, considering it’s supposed to come with 400 HP as well.
