Video: Tuned BMW F90 M5 Drag Races Ferrari 458 Speciale

It seems like the new BMW F90 M5 is already being tuned around the world. Various packages and tuning kits have surfaced already, the first ones focusing initially on the power the new 4.4-liter V8 engine is making. Whereas older models took a while to get tuned, as their ECUs were protected from intrusive eyes, today we’re looking at completely different processes. Mahnart showed us their kit for the M5 earlier and it has more than enough power.

In the footage below we get to see a BMW M5 race against a Ferrari 458 Speciale on what looks like a public highway. Of course, we don’t condone such behavior and strongly advise you to keep racing to the track but in this instance we were intrigued to see the M5 go up against a proper supercar like this Ferrari. Yes, it’s an older model but it’s still a supercar no matter how you look at it, and the BMW M5 is still a big sedan going up against it.

To avoid offering the Bimmer an unfair advantage, the race was done from a roll. If that wouldn’t have been the case, the M5 would be rocketing away from the 458 Speciale thanks to its all-wheel drive system. And even so, the race isn’t exactly fair as the Bavarian car has also been tuned, according to the video description. We aren’t told what kind of upgrades the car got or what kind of power it’s putting down now but the results of the race are pretty much self-explanatory.

The 458 Speciale comes with a 4.5-liter V8 good for 605 HP and 540 Nm (398 lb-ft) of torque in standard guise. Weighing just a bit under 1.4 tons, it will do the 0-62 mph sprint in 3 seconds flat, faster than the M5 and its 600 HP, despite having been launched back in 2013. That’s why seeing the M5 win this race, makes us wonder just what exactly hides under that hood.
