Video: BMW M5 Drag Races Dodge Demon with Rolling Start

The new BMW M5 is a fast car, no matter how you look at it. Now that it has 600 HP, some added traction was necessary to make sure the car can actually transfer it from the engine bay to the ground, turning launching the M5 into a proper land rocket. In the video below, however, the uber-sedan from Munich is taking on a rather unusual rival on the drag strip: the Dodge Demon. Unveiled about a year ago, the Demon was actually put together to win drag races so this isn’t exactly a fair race.

The Dodge comes with 840 HP and 770 lb-ft of torque out of its supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8, a drastic improvement over the 700 HP Hellcat. It is also claimed to be the fastest accelerating car in the world, with a sprint from 0-60 mph rated at 2.3 seconds. Created for the drag strip from the get go, the car can be delivered with skinny tires on the front axle, helping reduce drag so that you can accomplish even better times.

On the other side of the strip we have the M5 which is not a dragster. It has a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 good for 600 HP and 553 lb-ft of torque. It will do 62 mph from standstill in a claimed 3.4 seconds even though independent measuring showed closer to 3.2 seconds. That’s from a standstill though and over here we’re dealing with a rolling start. Understandably then, the M5 loses this race to the more powerful Demon.

However, considering a 610 HP Lamborghini Huracan also lost to it, the M5 doesn’t seem all that slow now, does it. The video also includes a race with the aforementioned Lambo but also with a tuned Ford F-150 which turns out to be quite fast as well.
