Now that the F90 BMW M5 is finally out with its brand new engine and all-wheel drive system, everyone wants to put the Bavarian machine to the test. It’s not just to compare muscles but also to see how the benchmark of the last 30 years compares to the cars that are already on the market. Since the guys from Audi are still working on a new RS6, the only car the BMW M5 needs to beat is the Mercedes-AMG E63 S.
At the same time, the comparison isn’t exactly fair. The real rival of the M5 should be the Mercedes-AMG E63 as the S version comes with more power and torque. The E63 has 571 PS and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque while its S brother comes with 612 PS and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) of torque. Both cars come with all-wheel drive and the difference between the acceleration times is just 0.1 seconds according to Mercedes-Benz though which does seem a bit peculiar considering the power difference.
Nevertheless, everyone’s focused on the E63 S and rightfully so. The uber sedan from Stuttgart showed it can hang with proper supercars in straight line acceleration while also being capable of carrying four people in comfort. The M5 is a similar story but with less weight to carry around and less power coming out of its 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8. Coming with 600 PS and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft), the M5 seems a bit overshadowed by the numbers of the Merc.
The all-wheel drive system now allows the M5 to keep up with the AMG in a straight line and, as the video below proves, more than just that because yes, the M5 wins both drag races here showing just how close these two monsters really are on a drag strip. We’ve seen a number of similar videos so far and in some the E63 S wins it, in others the M5 crosses the finish line first but in this instance, the Bavarian machine claims a win in both races. With the 625 PS Competition model coming soon, hard times are ahead for the Mercedes.
