People attending this year’s Geneva Motor Show will get to see a couple of new goodies from BMW, some of which announced a while back. However, alongside the German manufacturer we’ll also get to see the new Alpina XD3 model, the second time the manufacturer/tuner tunes a BMW X3 to never-before thought possible performance heights. Today, the uber-SUV also got an official video.
While the original was based on the xDrive35d X3, coming with an upgraded version of the biturbo 3-liter straight six engine of the Bimmer, the new one uses an engine that’s not yet available on the X3. Alpina claims their new XD3 comes with a 3-liter straight six diesel engine that’s been turbocharged into oblivion thanks to not one, not two and not three but four turbochargers. The end result has an impressive 388 PS and 770 Nm (567 lb-ft) of torque to play around with.
That translates into a 0-62 mph sprint of just 4.6 seconds and a top speed of over 155 mph. The Alpina people were rather scarce with the details and we don’t know right now if the mill used on the XD3 has any relation to the one used on the BMW 750d or M550d xDrive, the two using a quad-turbo 3-liter as well, codenamed B57S. However, on the BMWs the mill makes 400 HP and 760 Nm (560 lb-ft) of torque. It could be the same but usually Alpina likes to deliver more power than the cars they base their models on.
Therefore it could be quite possible that we’re dealing with a different engine that was developed by Alpina almost from scratch. Of course, it will be based on a mill put together by BMW initially, but it could be so heavily modified that it bares almost no resemblance to the original. That all remains to be seen. In the meantime, enjoy the launch video of the XD3 until we get to see it in the metal at Geneva.
