BMW i3 Police Car fleet allegedly sits unused by LAPD

In 2016, BMW of North America won a bid to supply the Los Angeles Police Department with 100 fully-electric BMW i3 vehicles for use in the department’s transportation fleet. The announcement came after a field trial during which a BMW i3 was evaluated alongside other EVs on the streets of Los Angeles as part of the LAPD’s every day fleet.

The BMW i3 police cars began hitting the streets of Los Angeles the same spring badged with an LAPD insignia.

According to a report from CBS Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Police Department spent $10 million to go green with a fleet of BMW i3 electric cars. CBS’s David Goldstein’s investigation finds, though, that many of those cars sit unused.

CBS also reports that the i3s have a very low mileage on them.

“It’s all a part of saving the Earth,” said LAPD Deputy Chief Jorge Villegas, “going green … quite frankly, to try and save money for the community and the taxpayers.”

Deputy Chief Villegas told Goldstein he’d look into CBS’s findings, but that he considers the program a success, and hopes EVs find more use.
