When MINI first showed off the facelift for its Cooper Hardtop, there was one aspect of the update that stood out more than anything else — its taillights. Built into the optional LED taillight design is the Union Jack, showing off its British heritage. While that seems trivial, it’s something that caught the attention of almost every single automotive journalist, for better or worse. I remember the day it launched, about a week ago, my twitter feed exploded with journalists either loving it or hating it. Love it or hate it, we were able to see those Union Jack taillights in person at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show.
Though, that isn’t the only part of the facelift, as it’s much more than that. It also received new headlights, both halogen or LED, which look better, more Connected services like its BMW counterparts and it also gets BMW’s latest infotainment technology. There’s also some new tech, such as wireless charging, to give the MINI Cooper some more luxury features. Probably the biggest addition to the MINI Cooper Hardtop is the new MINI Yours Customized range, which features the ability for customers to personalize different aspects of the car and get custom 3D-printed parts.
For instance, if a customer wants dashboard trim with their name written in it with backlighting, MINI can do that. If they want the skyline of their home city engraved in, MINI can do that, too. MINIs have always been heavily customizable but this takes it to a new level. And it starts with the newly facelifted MINI Cooper Hardtop.
There are also some new color options, such as Emerald Grey metallic, Starlight Blue metallic and Solaris Orange metallic. Starlight Blue looks really good and very “MINI” while Solaris Orange (pictured here) is very sporty. There are also a couple of new wheel options, such as Roulette Spoke 2-tone and Propeller Spoke 2-tone.
The current-gen MINI Cooper Hardtop is one of the best MINIs ever and this new facelift seems to have done just enough to keep it fresh and interesting. It still looks good and modern, while its interior is still handsome and high-quality. Now, though, it gets a few more unique touches and more customization, to make it more interesting and give it a bit more MINI feel.
