BMW’s first ever M8 – aside from the 90s one-off – will come to market in 2019 as the first member of the new M8 family. The new high-end M car is built upon the 8 Series platform which was unveiled last month at the 24 hrs of Le Mans, but with the typical M design cues and performance improvements.
Ahead of its world premiere scheduled sometimes in early 2019, a BMW M8 Coupe prototype was spotted in California wearing the usual camouflage on the outside, but surprisingly, little to none covers on the inside. Therefore, the images below show us the design of the M8 interior which, as expected, it’s nearly identical to the 8 Series’ approach to the cabin.
Atop that waterfall stack lies the new 12.3-inch iDrive screen that features BMW’s latest iDrive 7.0 technology. The screen is touchscreen compatible but iDrive retains a physical rotary control dial on the center console. That rotary dial is also new, with a knurled aluminum rim that looks far more premium than the current plastic one. Much like the new BMW X5 and 8 Series, the M8 features a Start/Stop button on the center console and a new shift lever which is made from crystal.
Ahead of the steering wheel also lies BMW’s new digital instrument panel, dubbed BMW Live Cockpit. As expected, M seats with side bolsters are part of the M treatment.
After seeing the M850i in the flesh, it’s not that hard to imagine what the actual M8 will look like. It’s going to be similar looking to the M850i, just lower, with angrier front air intakes and a carbon fiber roof, and, of course, featuring quad exhausts.
Under the hood, the BMW M8 Coupe will be packing a twin-turbo V8, likely a version of the M5’s, that will make over 600 hp.
