Wards Auto published their Top 10 Best Engines for 2019 and BMW’s B58 3.0-liter inline-six turbo engine is on the list. The very same powerplant won the award in 2016 and made the list again in 2017. With 355 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, the B58 provides power to a series of BMWs, from the X3 M40i to the M240i and the new X5 xDrive40i.
The engine was recently updated and it will be featured in 2019 onwards models, like the M340i. The main objective of the revision was to further improve emission performance to meet the requirements of the WLTP cycle and RDE measurements. In addition to the CO2 and particle emissions, the focus was on future legal limits as well.
Of course, the BMW B58 TÜ1 outperforms its predecessor in terms of performance. Initially, two power levels are planned, called ML (middle power level) and OL (upper power level). In the ML comes the B58 TÜ1 with 250 kW (340 hp) and 450 to 500 Newton meters of torque, the OL has 275 to 285 kW (374 to 388 hp) and 500 Newton meters of torque. Of course, the new M-engine S58 will adopt some ideas of the B58 TÜ1 development in an adapted form.
The Wards Auto list also includes the GM 6.2L OHV V8 with DFM (Silverado), Ford 5.0L DOHC V8 (Mustang GT/Bullitt), Ford 3.0L DOHC TurboDiesel V6 (F-150), Honda 2.0L DOHC Atkinson i-VTEC I4/HEV (Accord Hybrid), Hyundai 120-kW Fuel Cell/Electric Propulsion System (Nexo), Hyundai 150 kW Propulsion System (Kona EV), Infiniti 2.0L DOHC VC-Turbo I4 (QX50), Lexus 2.0L DOHC Atkinson I4/HEV (UX 250h) and FCA 3.6L DOHC Pentastar eTorque V6 (Ram 1500).
