Ever dreamed of time traveling back to the 1990s and buying yourself a brand new BMW to send back to the future and enjoy? I know I have, but it seems like you won’t have to get a pesky time machine to do so these days as a Bulgarian warehouse find shows miracles do exist. According to Bulgarian media, several never-driven BMW E34 5 Series models were found in a warehouse in the southwestern side of the country, all of them untouched by anything else but the decay of decades spent in storage.
The photos are pretty eloquent as to what shape these cars are in, showing mint interiors, some of them actually wrapped in protective foil from when they were delivered. Most of them are sedans and 520i model but there’s also a wagon in there and if you squint really hard you’ll also notice a couple of 525i models, which would be my pick. Both the 520i and 525i use 6-cylinder engines but the latter has a bigger displacement of 2.5-liters and delivers 189 HP and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque to the rear wheels, making it faster and the most popular model in the E34 range.
So why have they been abandoned you might ask. Well, there’s no exact answer but according to local media, they had been bought for a car rental company back in the 1990s but for reasons unknown they were never actually put to work. That’s mighty convenient for anyone looking to buy a mint E34 5 Series, as they will soon be sold, according to the same source. The prices are said to start at about €15,000 depending on the condition and that’s roughly $17,000 at today’s exchange rates.
If you live in Bulgaria you’re out of luck as you won’t be able to register these cars as brand new since the local law doesn’t allow cars with older Euro emission standards to be registered as new. However, all you need to do is cross the border into Romania or any other EU country to solve such an issue, depending on where you want to register your car. There’s also the option of keeping the car in storage and not driving it, in which case you don’t have to register it at all.
