Next generation BMW 1 Series gets rendered

BMW’s next generation 1 Series is due out in 2019. Whether the hatch as we know it today will continue to carry the 1 Series badge or the rumored 2 Series moniker, it remains to be seen, but what’s certain is that the new hatch will go through some significant changes. Our sources say that the design and construction of the next hatch will become even more premium while also being slightly larger than the current generation.

The 1 Series Hatchback will switch over to the UKL front-wheel drive platform and will continue to be built under the Fxx designation, in this case, F40. Available in two body styles, the future series of the BMW 1 Series – a “model developed especially for the city” – will have two body styles, one with three doors and a hatchback, offering greater interior roominess than that of the MINI.

BMW will give the five door hatch a front-wheel drive platform paired with three and four-cylinder engines. Models like the 116i, 118i, 120i, 116d, 118d and 120d will appear in the lineup, including a BMW 135ix which will likely replace the current rear-wheel drive M140i.

The folks at Motor1 have taken a stab at imagining what the F40 1er might look like and the rendering shown here builds atop the current BMW design language, but with a small twist – the headlights are slimmer and more angular, and full LED lights are standard. The front grille takes its cues from the recent BMW models, like the new 5 Series, being oversized and paired with 3D-sculpted slats.

The lower front end gets drawn with a more aggressive bumper which incorporates the chrome fins seen on other BMWs as well, paired with the large air intakes. We don’t expect a major deviation from the current 1 Series hatchback design, so those of us that love the balanced package and performance of the hot hatch will still be able to enjoy the new F40 generation.
