Toyota Supra Rendered, Spied by Top Speed, shows BMW influence

Ever since news broke that BMW would be partnering with Toyota to develop a new rear-wheel drive sports car, the minds of car enthusiasts immediately thought of the Supra. The Toyota Supra is probably the most famous tuner car of all time, made even more famous by the first Paul Walker Fast and Furious movie. However, this next Supra will have quite a lot of BMW influence and we can tell thanks to some new spy shots and rendering from our friends at Top Speed.

From the spy photos and rendering, which was done based on how the spied tester looks, it actually does look very much like a Supra. The short rear deck, long hood and short front overhang all give its body the classic Supra proportions and looks very good. In the rendering, it gets headlights and a front end that are actually a bit reminiscent of the Toyota GT86 but with massive front air intakes that give it a racy, aggressive look. In both the render and spy shots, you can see a body line at the bottom of the doors that leads backward, up to a rear fender vent that looks pretty cool and will probably be functional.

Regardless of how this car ends up looking, underneath the skin it will share quite a lot with the upcoming BMW Z4. Both cars are going to be built on the same platform and will have similar chassis and suspension technology. If you look closely at the spy photos, you can see the interior wears quite a lot of BMW bits. The steering wheel is pulled straight from a BMW 2/3/4 Series and the gauge cluster looks exactly like the one in the new 5 Series. While the steering wheel could be subject to change by production, and this could just be Toyota borrowing some BMW bits for testing, the gauge cluster will probably stick. Even the turn signal stalk is from a BMW, things like that usually do stay for production-ready cars.

We’re excited to see both cars to come from this joint-venture. Both the new BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra should be very exciting cars that compete to be the best cars in their respective segments. Also, with the Supra being built on the same platform as the BMW Z4, while also borrowing quite a lot of technology, it’s likely it could make it to the North American market, as we’re usually denied many of Japan’s best sports cars.
