Video: BMW M2 vs Audi RS3 on the Track

In a perfect world, the BMW M2 has no rival from the people in Ingolstadt or those from Stuttgart. Both Audi and Mercedes-Benz lack a proper Coupe similar in size to the M2 that could take on the champion from Munich. Sure, there’s the TT but to me that car doesn’t really look like a Coupe. Therefore, when talking about BMW vs Audi, you need to make a compromise. You can either compare the BMW M2 to the Audi RS3 or compare the M140i to the Audi S3. Let me explain.

The BMW 2 Series and 1 Series share their underpinnings and are similar in size overall. And while the hatch does have the advantage of offering more practicality, it lacks a proper M car to go up against the likes of the RS3 models. On the other hand, the guys from Cars South Africa couldn’t get the Audi TT RS to pit it against the M2 and here we are, looking at the two going at it like rabid gorillas.

A while back we saw them going at it in a straight up drag race which was won, unsurprisingly, by the car with all-wheel drive. We should point out that the 2017 Audi RS3 does come with an improved version of the old 2.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine now making 400 HP. Chip in the quattro system and 7-speed gearbox and Audi claims it will do 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.1 seconds. On the other side of the track was the M2 with its 3-liter straight six mill, 370 HP and rear-wheel drive. And yet, it came in seriously close to the RS3’s bumper in the end.

This time around, the RWD M car should have the upper hand, as the comparison in the footage below was shot on the track. The two went around the circuit twice, once with a standing start and once with a rolling start. The end result? Well, the BMW proved to be the faster machine but by a margin that’s just as small as the one that gave the RS3 the edge in the drag race.
