VIDEO: 1967 BMW 1600 featured on Jay Leno’s Garage

We know BMW as the Ultimate Driving Machine today. However, that wasn’t always the case for BMW in America. In fact, in the early ’60s, BMW was just another quirky German brand that your weird neighbor bought. It wasn’t until the Neue Klasse of cars that put BMW on the map in the US. One of the first of those cars was the BMW 1600, the precursor to the now-famous BMW 2002. In this latest video from Jay Leno’s Garage, we see why the 1600 became so popular in the ‘States and brought BMW to the mainstream.

This particular 1967 BMW 1600 is owned by a BMW enthusiast, Lisa Hong, who’s owned quite a few of classic Bimmers. A BMW 2002, E30 M3 and E36 M3 are just some of the cars she’s owned. While she modifies most of her cars, the 1600 is only very lightly restored. It’s still very pure and looks perfectly classic. It’s unmodified and almost entirely original, making it quite special. The Derby grey paint color, which is what Hong named the car after, has been resprayed but it’s the original color. It’s also a very cool color, one that you don’t see often.

Inside, it wears the classic vinyl and cloth seats that many BMWs of this era wore. It’s an interior scheme that fits the era well and looks cool enough to leave without modifying. I also like how bare it is on the inside, with no radio or air-conditioning. It’s as simple as it gets. Though, I’m not sure about that steering wheel. I know it’s original and it’s cool to keep the car that way but seeing a steering wheel that lacks a roundel in a BMW is just odd. Plus, it looks like it came out of a Buick, which was BMW’s intention at the time, so as to bring in American customers but still…Buick.

Under the hood is as simple an engine as it gets but that’s what makes it so great. It used a 1.6 liter four-cylinder engine that made around 90 hp. Considering the car weighed just over 2,000 lbs, that’s actually enough to scoot it around. That little engine was mated to a four-speed manual and powered the rear wheels. This sort of simplistic driving needs to be experienced by enthusiasts every now and again, to remind them that driving fun isn’t about performance numbers or power figures. In fact, sometimes those can get in the way of the fun.

Hong seems like a true enthusiast who really cars about the BMW brand and really likes her classics. It’s a cool video and a cool car, one that’s often forgotten, thanks to the popularity of its successor, the famous BMW 2002.

Houston BMW M3 and X5 owner saves his cars from Hurricane Harvey

At the moment, the people of Houston, Texas are still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. It’s an absolute tragedy, what’s happened in Houston and the people who live there are devastated. Here in south New Jersey, there are still areas that are in shambles from Hurricane Sandy, which happened years ago and wasn’t as devastating as Harvey as been. So I can only imagine what the people of Houston are going through. One Houston-native BMW enthusiast has been documenting the flooding at his house on his YouTube channel, showing how he managed to save his BMWs from the flood.

Cody Crochet owns two E36 BMW M3s and an E53 BMW X5. To keep his cars safe from the floods, he put his one track E36 M3 on a trailer, his other one was on jack stands in his garage and his lifted X5 was put on his lawn, the highest point he could find. Initially, he thought this would work. Until the flood really started. The white M3 on the trailer was fine, thanks to it being a few feet off the ground and his X5 was okay as well, thanks to being lifted and on big wheels and tires. However, his red M3, in the garage on jack stands, was getting dangerously close to being flooded with no signs of the rain stopping.

So Crochet had to think fast and work even faster to get his red M3 even higher off the ground. But how? Well, some quick thinking had him jack the car up even further and place garden bricks underneath the jack stands, raising them up even further. While this isn’t the safest idea, nor the most stable way to jack up a car, Crochet wasn’t really left with any other choice. So that’s what he did.

In about a foot of water, he put the jack underwater and jacked the car up on bricks. This must have taken awhile and had to be done soaking wet, while standing in water, during a Hurricane. Not easy stuff but he managed to get it done and it saved his car.

It might seem trivial to try so hard and save a car when your house is basically being destroyed. He claims he got about eight inches of water in his house, which is enough to do irreparable damage. All drywall has to be replaced, electrical work needs to be redone, mold needs to be removed and his hardwood floors will need to be replaced. And that’s if the foundation hasn’t shifted or been destroyed. So that much water can absolutely ruin someone’s house, making the saving of cars seem trivial. Except, that’s all you have left after a Hurricane like this. People in NJ and NY are still without homes after Sandy, years later, and they were left with nothing. So the fact that he saved his cars is actually a huge deal. Hopefully Crochet, as well as the rest of the people in Houston, can make it out of this okay.

Castle's Darragh Smith recovered from bogeys at his first two holes to card a five-under par 65 for a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the Irish Students Amateur Open Championship at Bray.

The leader eagled the par-five sixth and added birdies at the seventh, eighth, 11th, 14th and 15th to lead by the minimum on five-under par from Maynooth Scholars' Alan Fahy.

Maynooth golfers Ronan Mullarney, Eanna Griffin and Kyle McCarron, Ulster's Steffan Greenberg and Dublin Business School's Antony McDaid share third place in the 54-hole event, three shots off the lead after 68s.

Maynooth's Shannon Burke and Molly Dowling shot level par 72s to lead the women's tournament by a shot from team mate Ciara Casey.

Java Green Metallic BMW M4 looks stunning in new photos

BMW has slowly allowed more and more customization of new car orders into the US. Though common in Europe, it wasn’t until a few years back before BMW began allowing custom orders such as frozen paints to come to the United States. Today, we show you one wild looking Java Green Metallic M4 with a host of BMW M Performance Parts on it that rings in with a $94,390 MSRP.

BMW M USA “Build your own” site shows only four paints above the standard ones and they BMW individual colors for $1,950. However, Java Green Metallic and the frozen colors are not listed at all here. As you can see, the Monroney Label on this M4 shows, these special paints cost $5,200 assuming you can find a dealer willing to go through the trouble to order them for you.

Further customizing this Java Green Metallic M4 are some very nice BMW M Performance parts such as the $7,860 M Performance Package which includes the M Performance Exhaust with carbon fiber tips, carbon fiber rear spoiler, carbon fiber front aerokit.  Also added are Carbon Fiber Mirror Caps for $1,085, and M Lower rocker panel blades in black for $410 .

For those who have the means and don’t just want the plain old “run of the mill” M4, it’s good to see that BMW offers further customization. It just takes persistence in finding a dealer willing to go through the extra steps required. Further these custom orders do require extra time to be produced and you will find that not all dealers participate in such customization.

2017 BMW 5 Series Wins Goldener Computer Award for ConnectedDrive

When it comes to cars, people don’t expect them to win awards for connectivity, especially if they are handed out by computer magazines. However, the G30 BMW 5 Series did just that in a survey carried out by the people over at Computer Bild, Europe’s highest-circulation computer magazine. The 5er won the Goldener Computer award in the “Connected Car” category. The business athlete won the most votes for its extensive connectivity offering, turning BMW into the only car maker to win a “Goldener Computer” award in 2017.

BMW was quick to spot the growing importance of connectivity between vehicles, their drivers and the outside world – and the possibilities it opened up – with its ConnectedDrive solutions. And it took the lead in driving forward development of the relevant technology. The company’s third “Goldener Computer” award in the “Connected Car” category, which was included in the survey for the fifth time this year, shows that BMW’s leading role has also been noted by the public.

Integrating e-mail accounts into the car via Microsoft Exchange enables the best possible data security when it comes to managing calendar entries, e-mail and contacts. And with BMW Connected the new 5 Series creates a digital bridge between the car and the user’s smartphone. This digital assistant allows smartphone content to be viewed and used on the Control Display. BMW Connected also helps the driver with their personal appointment and mobility planning – both while on the move and at their home or workplace.

In doing so, it gets to know the user better all the time and gears its responses increasingly to their personal preferences. For route guidance, BMW Connected uses the car’s navigation system, which also enables three-dimensional route display (optional) and incorporates Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI) into its route calculations. BMW Connected also uses the Remote 3D View function to enable the driver to monitor the area around their car remotely on their smartphone.

The new BMW 5 Series comes as standard with a WiFi hotspot, too, which uses a SIM card embedded in the car to give passengers online access from up to ten devices. In addition, the hotspot presents customers with the option of using Apple CarPlay wirelessly and inductively charging suitably equipped smartphones. Further comfort and convenience are provided by clever online services ParkNow and On-Street Parking Information, which customers can use to reserve a parking space and pay for it cash-free or help to find vacant spaces at the side of the road. The Remote Services – which include a handy Vehicle Finder function – and Concierge Services, which offer personalized assistance with destination selection and travel arrangements.

This is the 20th time that “Computer Bild”, “Computer Bild Spiele”, “Audio Video Foto Bild” and their shared technology portal www.computerbild.de have got together to present the “Goldener Computer”, today considered among the most prestigious awards in the European IT sector. Prizes are awarded each year to innovations garnering the most votes in an online poll of more than 20,000 respondents. The “Connected Car” category introduced in 2013 is evidence of the importance now attached to intelligent vehicle connectivity.

And Then There Was Blue Sky

It took me hours to write this post today. It is so hard to find words to express how I feel.

Harvey has finally passed, leaving in its path a giant swath of destruction.  Last night, for the the first time in days, we were greeted with receding water and blue sky and many of our neighbors were out walking about checking up on each other. It has been less than a week but it seems like it has been a lifetime since life was normal.

Everyone here had tragic stories to tell about friends and family who lost everything. Last night one of our neighbors told us that their son and daughter-in-law weren't able to get out of their neighborhood and had to stand in their one-story house in 18 inches of water waiting to be rescued. They had a blow-up mattress between them holding their two cats and one dog. When they finally got rescued they wanted nothing more than to get to their parent's house, but it was completely impossible until late last night.

One of my parent's friend just called them and said their house was underwater and they didn't think they could get back there for days/weeks since there was a bridge collapse in that area.

Paul's friend in Rockport lost her entire house and clinic to the hurricane and has already moved to San Antonio and started working and has no plans ever to return. She escaped with the clothes on her back and her family and nothing else.

I have heard tragic story after tragic story like everyone else. Houston is a huge town and I bet most of you reading this has family or friends in this area or know someone who does. I hope they are all safe.

Our house and Paul's clinic received no flood damage and we are so thankful. But at the same time as I feel this great sense of relief, I also can't start thinking about everyone affected by this storm that were not fortunate like my family.

Last night and today I have spent hours watching videos of my town under water. People with their children and pets getting rescued while standing in waist-deep dirty water. Subdivisions filled with family homes under water... Houston a giant lake with small islands. And I realize we won't know the true amount of devastation for some time.

I was born in Houston and have lived in the Houston area most of my life. I have moved away a few times for school and work, but have always come back.  This is my home and I love this town. And I know it will come back. Scarred and exhausted and scared for the future, but it will be rebuilt. This country needs Houston back and strong.

I hope everyone is safe out there. And I want to thank all of the amazing heroes out there who risked their own life to save others. And all of the generous people who have provided financial aid and comfort to those in need. These last days have left me weak emotionally and physically, but it has once again reminded me how people are simply incredible. This horrific storm showed once again that normal people are heroes in time of need. And God bless all of you.

Thanks to all of you who are helping! Here is a list of shelters and other resources if you want to help support Houston and the surrounding areas.
