Around Europe, the most popular choices when it comes to the BMW 3 Series and 5 Series models are the ’18d and ’20d models. That’s perfectly explainable as the two offer the best mixture between performance and frugality. However, they do have a flaw and quite a big one, depending on who you ask: their exhaust sound. Diesel mills are known to be less than enthralling in this aspect and solutions to the matter have been scarce.
That’s if you don’t want to cheat. The thing is, no matter what exhaust you may want to use, the sound of a compression-ignition engine can’t match up to a petrol one. So what’s there to be done? Well, Audi has been using an active sound exhaust for quite some time now on some of its models. They have speakers integrated in the rear mufflers that simply play sounds other, more exciting cars make. And while some have said this is just despicable, others understand the reasoning behind it.
If you own an E90 3 Series with a 2-liter diesel engine and you’ve been desperately looking for a way to mix your mpg numbers with a little more ‘soul’, the guys from InsidePerformance might have something for you. Their active exhaust brings the sound of a V8 to your car’s rear end for just a bit over 1,000 Euros. The same system is offered by BMW for some 1 and 2 Series models as part of the M Performance aftermarket line-up but they are considerably more expensive.
The system offered by the German company uses a speaker that can be controlled via the cruise control buttons, with which you can even adjust the sound, not just turn it on or off. You can change the noise made when the car starts up and even the replicated idle speed and a lot more factors. For this kind of money, we’re hard pressed to find a better solution but then again, some may consider it cheating. What’s your take on it, would you be interested or is it just ‘despicable’ to cheat bystanders like this?

Since the European legislation is getting stricter regarding emissions by the day – and rightfully so – manufacturers have to find creative ways of delivering performance without going out of business. BMW as well as others, are relying heavily on forced induction to do so and that’s how we end up with different models using the same base engine with various modifications done to it. It’s the case of the BMW 730d if you will.
The 2016 730d uses the new age B57 engine as it was initially developed. The 3-liter straight six diesel mill under the hood is brilliant and will bring forward 265 HP and 620 Nm (457 lb-ft) of torque using a single twin-scroll turbocharger. That’s enough for the new 7 Series to be quite brisk off the line and reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.8 seconds which is fast for a limousine of its caliber. But what if that’s not enough? Well, just add more turbos to the mix.
Going up in the diesel range you’ve got the 740d model that uses the same base engine but with two turbochargers attached to it. That means the power output goes up to 320 HP and 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) of torque. That means this diesel limousine has the same amount of torque as the S63 4.4-liter V8 in the M5 and M6 models. It also means the car will reach the benchmark speed in 5.3 seconds, the car in the video below being a long wheelbase version.
If that’s still not enough, you need to go for the uber-diesel monster of the range we tested earlier this year. The BMW 750d is a quad-turbocharged (that’s four turbos) monster that, of course, uses the same base B57 engine. The power output went up to 400 HP and 760 Nm (560 lb-ft) of torque and those figures don’t even begin to tell the story of this car just written on paper. They allow this thing to accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7 seconds in long wheelbase guise. Oh, and before you make the jump to the video below to choose your preferred car, you need to know all of them are xDrive models for proper traction.
Of course, the immediate choice would be the 750d for anyone. The engine alone is an engineering masterpiece but for daily driving is it too much? From our experience, the 730d can do everything you need it to without breaking a sweat and the price difference might just make it seem more attractive. What’s your take on the matter? Which one would you get based on what the video below shows?

When BMW introduced the 2 Series, they wanted the world to perceive it as a spiritual successor to the BMW 02 Series models, the 2002 to be more specific. Some may not agree with that conclusion, but it would make the BMW M2 the successor of the 2002 Turbo, a legendary car in Munich.
The thing is the first ever BMW 3 Series was born from the 02 Series. The E21 3er was, however, a two-door model, whether the Germans marketed it as a sedan or not. Since today the 3 Series range is no longer made up of any car with just two doors, be it coupe or not, the association with the 2 Series does make sense, as the 4 Series has grown too much in size to be associated with the original 02 Series.
Leaving such disputes aside though, we’re here to take a look at a sort of tribute paid to the original BMW 2002 Turbo. The guys from Laptime-Performance put together an impressive BMW M2 and adorned it with the legendary M stripes as well as ‘Turbo’ lettering on the sides in the exact same font used on the original car.
But apart from the lettering and the stripes and the tribute to the original car that preceded even the launch of the M division, the M2 we’re looking at here is also sporting other modifications, to make it even faster than stock. These changes includes a new front GTS lip, a CSL-style trunk lid and a carbon fiber bonnet that’s also vented.
The wheels are HRE R101 19” in a brushed gold finish while round the back you’ll notice an Akrapovic Evolution exhaust system. The ride was also dropped a bit by means of a KW Clubsport 3-way adjustable kit while the power output went up thanks to a Mcchip-DKR upgrade that took it up to 415 HP and 560 Nm (410 lb-ft) of torque.

The Rolls-Royce Dawn is the latest addition of the Goodwood-based company to its portfolio and a good looking one at that. However, even though it is a new model, it still shares a lot of its body with the Rolls-Royce Wraith and the Ghost.
As a matter of fact, all of them use the same platform but that’s not what we’re here for. We’re here to find out a different word for ‘Dawn’. Care to guess? How about ‘sunrise’? That may work, as the Rolls-Royce Wraith we have here is wearing a color that is supposed to replicate the sky just as the sun is rising.
The bespoke model was built for the Abu-Dhabi BMW dealership, the place where it was also named and where we’ve seen a lot of custom model being delivered lately. The one-tone exterior does match the interior to some degree and when you take into account the ‘stars’ on the roof lining, you can actually trick yourself into believing its morning every moment of the day.
The colors of the interior leather are called ‘Sunset’ and ‘Seashell’, further hinting at what an incurable romantic the owner must be. Even the wheels are sporting a bi-color finish, wearing the same colors as the rest of the car’s body.
Under the hood though, things remained the same as is usually the case for Rolls-Royce owners. After all, under the hood of every Wraith hides a monstrous 6.6-liter V12 good for 632 HP and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque, enough to send you on your way to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.6 seconds. Not that it would matter for a Rolls-Royce owner anyway.
