Video: Here’s the Secret to Rolls-Royce’s Timeless Design

Rolls-Royce is a brand known for many things but not for the fact that its cars age poorly. As a matter of fact, one of the key attributes Rolls-Royce cars have is the timeless design they seem graced with. It’s somewhat of a lost art these days, as a lot of new cars seem to lose their spark only a few years after they are launched, leaving owners and bystanders alike wondering what it was that attracted their attention in the first place.

If you ever wondered how Rolls-Royce manages to bring out timeless cars over and over again, the video below should provide some insight. Narrated by Kate Winslet, it’s one of a multi-episode series aiming at familiarizing people more with what happens in Goodwood and how the brand became synonymous with the utmost luxury these days. The series started with the story behind the beautiful badge we’ve all grown to love, otherwise known as the Spirit of Ecstasy. It continued with the inner workings of the Goodwood plant and we’re now looking at the third episode.

This time we’re introduced into the process behind designing the cars. The approach in Goodwood has always been on the long run. As a matter of fact, even though technology advances at a never-before seen rapid pace, their cars usually have longer than the industry standard production spans, the previous Phantom, for example, having been in production for about 14 years. Therefore, the design of these machines has to withstand the test of time.

As for how that is achieved, I won’t go into details but let you discover on your own. Let’s just say that symmetry plays a central role alongside math and precise lines. Even on the Vision 100 vehicle drew up by Rolls-Royce, a concept meant to look into the future, the same guiding principles were applied.
