Dawson now 13th in the world

Castle’s Alex Gleeson, Hermitage’s Rowan Lester and Tramore’s Robin Dawson are in red figures after the opening round of the European Amateur Championship at Royal Hague.

Gleeson and Lester are tied for ninth, four strokes off the lead, after carding two-under 70s with new world amateur number 13 Dawson tied for 17th after a 71.

Naas’ Jonny Yates and Portmarnock’s Conor Purcell shot one-over 73s to share 47th as Masserreene’s Tiarnan McLarnon posts a four-over 76 and Kilkenny’s Mark Power a seven-over 79.

Denmark’s Perry Cohen followed an opening bogey with six birdies in a five-under 67 to lead by a shot from compatriot Rasmus Hojgaard and Adrien Pendaries of France.
