Challenge Tour — Gavin Moynihan bogeyed two of his last three holes to slip five strokes behind leader Erik Van Rooyen at the Hainan Open in China.

The Mount Wolseley touring professional added a two-under 70 to his opening 67 to get to seven under par.

But it could have been even better for the 23-year old, who birdied the 10th and 15th to be out in 34, then followed a bogey at the first with birdies at the second, fifth and sixth to get to nine-under for the tournament.

Dropped shots at the seventh and ninth took some of the gloss off the day and left Moynihan tied for tenth on seven-under.

The former Walker Cup player is 30th in the Road to Oman standings but could move closer to the top 15 who will be awarded European Tour status at the end of the season with a top-five finish this week.

South African Van Rooyen shot a bogey-free, seven-under par 65 to lead by a stroke on 12-under from Indonesia's Rory Hie (66) and by two from Finland's Tapio Pulkkanen (66).

Scotland's Grant Forrest (68) and overnight leader Steven Brown of England (69) are tied for fourth, three shots behind Van Rooyen on nine-under.
