Studio, close-up shots of the BMW Concept Z4

BMW is showcasing today in Pebble Beach a glimpse at the future of its successor – the BMW Concept Z4.  Along with the Concept 8 Series, the new roadster introduces BMW’s next generation of styling cues. The new concept has a classical roadster design which includes a long wheelbase, low-slung and stretched silhouette, and a compact rear end. The package also features big brakes, aggressive styling and a low roofline.

“Overall we have a completely new facial expression,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Head of Design at BMW Group. And moving to the side, note that the clamshell hood’s shutline runs into a body crease that stretches toward the rear of the car. “There is really only one line that matters,” van Hooydonk explains, with a “very interesting play, we believe, between sharp lines and soft body areas.”

The typical driver-oriented cockpit shines in the new Z4. “The cockpit is really center around the driver, both in geometry and in color,” van Hooydonk says.

He also says one of the big goals with the new design language was making it “cleaner” with fewer lines and creases. Long gone are also the extended design cycles between cars and a push towards new design language as soon as a refresh is needed.

The photo gallery below gives us a better look at the design lines of the Concept Z4.
